The last few years I have been having sleep problems. I had no idea how serious this was until I had surgery, and did not wake up in the expected amount of time in the recovery room. When I awoke, the nurse told me I had taken four times the normal amount of time to wake up, and that I had stopped and than started breathing several times while they were watching me. My husband had noticed that I snored, and tossed and turned in bed, and generally felt exhausted during the day, despite having 8 hours of sleep and a nap during the day. I felt so tired that I think I could have slept standing up!
Luckily, my doctor set-up a supervised sleep study at a facility near by that specializes in sleep disorders. I checked into the facility for two evenings. My room was like a hotel room except it had a video monitor so that a technician could check on me periodically without coming into the room itself. I was hooked up to about 15 small sensors placed on my head, legs, arms, and body. These sensors would detect and record movement and breathing.
Boy, was I ever surprised when the technician told me I had up to 90 episodes of sleep apnea per hour. They put that in the OMG (oh, my God) category, though this is probably not the scientific term for it! The next night, back at the sleep clinic, they put me back on the monitors and hooked up a compressed breathing device (CPAP) which forces air into my nose. After only 3 hours of the CPAP treatment, I woke up feeling refreshed. I felt like a whole new person with tons of energy. I now use the CPAP every night, and it has made a world of difference in my health. I'm not tired all the time anymore.

Something very interesting about CPAP machines is that they are also used on infants. For those babies that have trouble breathing, a cpap can be a life saving tool.
