I’m scheduled for a sleep clinic what can I expect
Understanding what to expect is best told from the perspective of a patient who has gone through it -- "When I arrive for my first monitored sleep study the hospital where it was conducted did not yet have a designated sleep lab. They also did not have an overabundance of babies being born that night so I was set up in an overflow of the maternity ward. Once the sleep technician had attached electronic leads to my body (many more than the home study used) and fitted me with a properly sized cpap mask, I was allowed to read or count sheep until I was able to fall asleep at around 10:00pm. During the night the technician came into the large, cold room my bed was in and adjusted the settings on the large machine next to my bed. I was vaguely aware of his presence from time to time as he changed settings including the centimeters of “continuous positive air pressure” being forced through my mask. Around 6:00am the next morning after my first night as a cpap user, as I was fortunate enough to experience a euphoric, comfortable sleep feeling while waking up that I could not remember experiencing for years. Even in a large drafty room with wires glued to my head, face & chest, a mask belted to my face and unable to move because of the wires and a cpap hose sharing my bed, I was well rested, happy and I knew that cpap was going to allow me to sleep through the night no longer kicking, gasping and choking for air. I couldn’t wait for someone to view and interpret my sleep study so I could use cpap again. Because it was a small town without a defined sleep clinic it took over four weeks for my test to be read and to be notified that I did indeed suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. In a subsequent sleep study five years later in a sleep clinic in another city, the sleep technician connected significantly even more electronic leads. I was in a comfortable, soft bed in a cozy, homey room that resembled a bed & breakfast! The sleep technician did not come into the room to adjust sleep equipment settings but instead was located in a separate control room. There was apparently audio and video that allowed her to view and hear me and for me hear her. If I needed anything I simply had to talk to her."
